Working on a town hall presentation these days and stumbled across a neat quotations site called World of Inspiration.

Actually found a bunch I haven’t heard (which is really saying something)….like this one…“Just because something is easy to measure doesn’t mean it’s important.”  Seth Godin.

Speaking of Seth Godin…have you heard of The Domino Project?   I’m in love with this site and concept – changing the way books are created, sold and sent out into the world.  I, of course, have all the books and they are, of course, all great and highly recommended.   I haven’t read ‘We’re All Weird’ yet but with that title alone, c’mon, you know it’s gonna be great.   Oh and the cover is amazing, as all their covers are.

Oh and to all my tens of readers, sorry I haven’t posted in what feels like forever.   In recent months I actually started a new job and well, it’s been so beezy.   Anyway, I promise to share more frequently particularly as the new job has caused me to come up with a whole slew of snazzy new communication and engagement initiatives.  Fun, fun, fun.

Complete non-sequitur…

Here is a picture of our Havanese Rudy…I know, so cute right?

The other day I was thinking, ‘You know what?  People, umm, OK, fine, I, should consume less and create more.’   Behind the thought was the feeling that consumption is in a way a pretty lazy, self-centered and really distracting exercise, and doesn’t do a thing to advance your presence, or your contribution, in the world.  Creating is more work, but brings far more joy than any amount of things ever could.  And so, for me, it was a simple reminder to make an effort to create whenever I possibly can.

I think its a cool mantra.  It’s no aum or anything, but still…  I promptly tacked the phrase up in my office.

About a day later, curious to see if anyone out on the Internets shared the brilliance of my insight (cough) I tapped my new motto into Google and remarkably (OK maybe not THAT remarkably) found that not only had other folks at some point had the same epiphany, but a talented and like-minded soul from Nebraska actually took the phrase to heart and used it to create a pretty neat quotations site that’s well, pretty neat.   I think that’s what you call serendipity.

By the way, the pic that adorns this post is Flannery O’Connor, and I included it simply because I love her soooo much and because she had such grit, brilliance and tenacity.  This is my favorite picture of her.  I always imagine she’s watching her peacocks, and that I’m in the rocking chair to her right sipping a tall lemonade and not really speaking in that, we’re-so-like-minded-we-don’t-need-to-ruin-it-with-words, kind of way.   Ya I know.

Oh, and here’s my favorite quote by Ms. O’Connor, which I’ve pretty much come to know by heart.  It reminds me to conquer the monsters, of consumption or otherwise, and to just go create something.

“When I sit down to write, a monstrous reader looms up who sits down beside me and continually mutters, ‘I don’t get it, I don’t see it, I don’t want it.’ Some writers can ignore this presence, but I have never learned how.”

I was thinking that we all learn by experience, but some of us have to go to summer school(Peter De Vries)

How are you spending your time during these hot, humid and at least for me, relatively quiet days of August? Personally I’m trying to avoid browsing all the amazing cardis Anthropologie is stocking for the fall (fa-bu-lous-ness) and rather adhering to the advice of a colleague who many years ago advised that when things are slow you should take advantage and ‘go to school’.   It was, and is, good advice.

So off to summer school I’ve gone!  Although not like in HS when I was actually sent to summer school for gym.  God I hated gym.

Anyway, I’ve been spending time browsing our corporate intranet and taking any online course I can find that may help to increase my general knowledge and expertise.  I’m also taking the time to improve my understanding of our corporate strategy, initiatives, brand and so forth.    If you have access to one – I bet you’ll find a lot more on your intranet than you might think.    If not, I’d see it as a great opportunity to contribute, and maybe that’s how you end up spending your downtime (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, jab)

Although I can’t (obviously) share what I’ve sourced internally with all of y’all, I CAN share other great bits of information and inspiration I’ve managed to find online – so here you go:

I’ll keep posting as I continue discovering.   Feel free to share anything you come across as well.

Happy Summer!
